“Every Monday morning would begin with a school gathering. We would listen to a group lecture and watch the red flag rise as we sang the national anthem. All the students in the city wore the same uniform. Boys had blue shorts and a blue shirt with a white collar; Girls had blue shorts and a white shirt with a blue collar. We all had the same meal plan. I would get a cold box of milk and cheap packages of breads and cakes. They were not always the same, but l lost track. I would spend my school days memorizing poems and paragraphs of text I didn’t fully comprehend. I would go home around the same time every day. My dad always made rice for dinner.”
In Chinese culture, everyone in the educational system is expected to think, dress, and act alike. After being in the United States for the past six years, I realize how my childhood education in China resulted in a lost sense of individuality. This project is my attempt to confront my past and my childhood memories. It is with this photographic series that I am embracing my own cultural difference and my own unique sense of self.
